The
Conservation Security
Program (CSP) is a voluntary
program that provides
financial and technical
assistance for the
conservation, protection,
and improvement of soil,
water, air, energy, plant
and animal life, and other
conservation purposes on
Tribal and private lands.
The program provides
payments for producers who
practice good stewardship on
their agricultural lands and
incentives for those who
want to do more.
The program is designed to
reward the best conservation
stewards of the most
environmentally sensitive
areas in targeted
watersheds.
Eligible Area-- North Fork
Shenandoah Watershed
Farmers in the Great Wicomico-Piankatank in eastern Virginia, and the North
Fork Shenandoah in north-western Virginia will be eligible to apply for
incentive payments to maintain and improve conservation practices that prevent
erosion, reduce nutrient runoff, and improve water quality.
2006 CSP Sign-Up
Sign-up for CSP will be February 13 - March 31, 2006.
USDA announced preliminary selection of 110 watersheds for fiscal year 2006
based on the President's budget request. Based on available funding, CSP will be
offered in 60 watersheds nationwide, including the North Fork Shenandoah.
To be eligible for CSP, most of a producer's agricultural operation must fall
within the boundaries of the North Fork of the Shenandoah watershed. The sign-up
will only include those producers who do not have an existing CSP contract.
