Congressman Goodlatte Tours Virginia EWP Sites

Staunton, VA, July 5, 2005- Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-6th ), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, has a special interest in NRCS’ Emergency Watershed Protection Program.  His district was hard hit by flooding during past storms.  NRCS has just completed work on 10 sites to restore streams threatening lives and property in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties.

At the congressman’s request, State Conservationist M. Denise Doetzer arranged a tour of some sites in the South River Watershed. Two representatives from the Augusta and Rockbridge County Boards of Supervisors joined the congressman to see the EWP work

At the site, EWP Program Manager Wade Biddix and District Conservationist Bobby Whitescarver gave an overview of the projects.  Work done by NRCS included assessing stream damages, developing designs for stabilizing streambanks, and contracting construction of projects.  The EWP work in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties was completed using locally led contracting.

These projects are among 60 hazardous sites statewide being restored with $2.1 million in federal Emergency Watershed Protection Funds.  Work is complete in Augusta, Rockbridge, Greene, Madison, Highland, Bath, and Allegany Counties. Work is continuing in Page, Patrick and Rockingham Counties plus Chesapeake City and the Town of Damascus
